On March 14, 1954 KUAM Radio signed on the air as the first commercial broadcast station in Guam’s history. KUAM Radio 610 AM set a precedent that would forever change the way our local community received information and entertainment as well as prove the impact of advertisements and public service messages through the broadcast media.
Two years later KUAM spawned a television sibling for its AM radio station. KUAM TV, also an affiliate of NBC, signed on the air in August of 1956. KUAM TV and Radio, now under the Pacific Telestations, LLC umbrella, consists of Isla 63AM, I-94FM – 93.9 FM, KUAM TV8 (NBC Affiliate), and KUAM TV11 (CBS Affiliate), and www.kuam.com.
Much has changed in the years since a group of California entertainment executives, initiated Guam’s first ever-commercial broadcast station. But through all the changes in technology and our island’s economy, KUAM’s commitment to localism has remained steadfast. Through the years we’ve come into your homes, kept you informed and aware during triumphs and tragedy, and celebrated several remarkable milestones in Guam’s history together. KUAM has also provided a steady stream of entertainment with both national and local music, programs and formats through the years. We’ve provided a platform for the preservation of our language and culture through a Chamorro talk and music format on Isla 63 AM. Today, we are happy to entertain an international audience of Guamanians worldwide who, thanks to modern technology, can listen to and interact with our stations via streaming audio, video, our website and social media. KUAM has also won several awards for quality programming and journalism and various community service designations from local organizations.
We are the island’s premiere media leader – revolutionizing the way Guamanians around the world receive their information and entertainment.
Our slogan “First on Guam” has less to do with chronologically being the first commercial broadcast station, but is more about being first in the hearts and minds of our users, viewers and advertisers.
